  • Start Composting: Reduce waste and nourish your plants with homemade compost.

  • Grow Native: Incorporate native Hawaiian plants like Ma’o or ‘Ilima into your garden to support local biodiversity.

  • Plant a Pollinator Garden: Help our vital bees and butterflies thrive with pollinator-friendly flora like crown flowers and milkweed.

Wondering What to Do With Your Post-Holiday Poinsettias?

Did you know that poinsettias are tropical plants that originate in southern Mexico and parts of Central America? With proper care, they can thrive year-round in Hawaii. Here are some tips to help them flourish:

  • Planting: After the holidays, transfer your poinsettia to a larger pot or directly into the ground. They love well-drained soil and partial sunlight.

  • Watering: Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply once a week.

  • Pruning: Prune back leggy stems to encourage new growth.

  • Encouraging Blooms: For vibrant colors, reduce light exposure to 12-14 hours daily about three months before you want them to bloom. This provides the necessary darkness for blooming.

  • Pinch Them Back: In Hawaii, these plants can grow to be quite large (up to 15 feet in some cases). Pinch them back to prevent uncontrolled growth.

With these tips, your poinsettias can become a long-lasting centerpiece for your garden or home.

Poinsettia Fun Fact:

The red "flowers" of poinsettias are actually leaves. The true poinsettia flowers are small and yellow, located in the center of the colored bracts.

What’s going on in the Garden Center?

This month we have been struggling with a variety of issues plaguing our citrus plants. Growing citrus in Hawaiʻi comes with unique challenges due to the warm, humid climate. While there are no harsh winters, high humidity, pests, and limited chill hours can affect tree health and fruit quality. We’d like to pass on some tips that we have used to keep our citrus healthy.

  1. Prune Regularly: Improve airflow to prevent mold and promote healthy growth.

  2. Choose Local Favorites: Meyer lemon, Calamondin lime, and Dancy tangerine thrive in Hawaiʻi.

  3. Fertilize Year-Round: Feed your trees consistently for fruiting and overall health.

  4. Check for Pests: Inspect for common issues like scale insects and treat promptly.

  5. Sun and Airflow: Plant in sunny spots with good air circulation to prevent fungal issues. We recommend treating fungal issues with products using copper as its active ingredient.

  6. Water Wisely: Ensure consistent watering, especially in drier periods, and use well-draining soil.

Prepare now to ensure your citrus trees thrive into spring! □□

December’s VIP Deals

Our email VIPs get exclusive access to upcoming deals and discounts. This month, pick up one of the featured edible plants below for FREE with your next order!

To help you care for your free plant, we have provided you with some tips and techniques below.

Papaya

  • Growing Conditions: Papaya thrives in Hawaii's warm, sunny climate. It prefers well-draining, fertile soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0).

  • Care Tips:

    • Plant in a location with full sunlight.

    • Water regularly but avoid overwatering, as papayas are prone to root rot.

    • Fertilize monthly with a balanced fertilizer.

  • Small Pot Tip: Start the papaya in the pot, but transplant it to the ground or a larger pot within 6–12 months, as papayas grow quickly and need space.

Waialua Peppers

  • Growing Conditions: Grow in full sunlight in fertile, well-draining soil.

  • Care Tips:

    • Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy.

    • Use a balanced fertilizer or one slightly higher in potassium for fruit production.

    • Prune occasionally to encourage bushy growth and higher yield.

  • Small Pot Tip: Peppers grow well in pots but ensure good drainage and upgrade the pot size as the plant matures.

Carrots

  • Growing Conditions: Grow in loose, sandy soil. Avoid compacted or rocky soil.

  • Care Tips:

    • Provide a sunny location with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight.

    • Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during germination.

    • Thin seedlings to avoid overcrowding.

  • Small Pot Tip: Use a deep pot (8–12 inches) with loose soil, as carrots need depth for proper growth.

Green Onions

  • Growing Conditions: Grow well in fertile, well-draining soil. They adapt well to containers and small spaces.

  • Care Tips:

    • Place in a sunny spot; they need at least 6 hours of light daily.

    • Water regularly to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.

    • Harvest by cutting the green tops and letting the bulbs regrow.

  • Small Pot Tip: A shallow pot (6–8 inches deep) is sufficient, as green onions have shallow roots.

All of our plants are grown without harmful chemicals or pesticides and are the perfect addition to your vegetable garden. Stop on in today!

Our Fall Focus: Fruit Trees!

It’s that time of year again… Fall is the perfect season to educate yourself about fruit trees that grow on O’ahu. One easy way to do that is to visit our grower’s website here. Our Āina is the most hospitable right now for growing fruit trees — after the dry season, but before the heavy rains.

We’re ordering more fruit trees very soon and would love to know what you would like to see us carry in our nursery (purchase not necessary)
. Email us at [email protected] to suggest a tree.

Our educational focus for this month is the Papaya tree.

Did you know?

Hawaii is the only known U.S. state that commercially cultivates papayas. In the 1800's, papaya was introduced to Hawaii, and in the early 20th century it was introduced to Florida. However, the Florida crop experienced the introduction of a viral disease which destroyed the crop. This left Hawaii as the only state in the U.S. to produce papaya commercially.

During the month of November, we have a 25% off sale on papayas grown from seeds obtained through the University of Hawaii’s College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources. This year, we have decided to grow the non-GMO Hawaiian Solo Waimanalo Super-Sweet X-77 variety. These papaya trees produce a sweet, low bearing fruit. That means the plant will bear fruit when it is about 0.75 meters tall. Hawaii solo papayas typically weigh 22 to 39 ounces and have a thickness of about 6 inches. Fruits are either red or yellow. This variety is also fast growing, only taking about 10 to 12 months from seed to harvest.

Click here to visit UH Manoa’s Agricultural Diagnostic Service Center Seed Program website to learn more about local seed varieties.

A Look at Our Garden Pollinators…

Monarch butterflies aren’t just pretty to look at, they help our native plants and wildflowers thrive! These pollinators sure do love our Crown Flowers. Just last week we found over 20 Monarch caterpillars chewing their way into becoming bright, beautiful butterflies.

Although crown flowers are known for attracting monarch butterflies, we have also noticed a new active bee population around the established crown flower plants in our garden.

Bees are essential for a healthy garden. With the decline of bee populations globally, it’s important to foster environments where these pollinators can thrive.

Students use our crown flowers for school projects. Please let us know if we can help you with your keiki’s project. Please consider planting some milkweed or picking up some pesticide-free crown flower from our nursery to help our butterfly population flourish.

Mention this newsletter for 25% off your November purchase of crown flowers!

November’s Volunteer Spotlight

This month we’re featuring an organization that we’re especially grateful for…

The Hawaii Gifted Association (HGA) was founded to support gifted and talented individuals looking to pursue higher education. They are still accepting donations to help HGA Scholars. The deadline for applying for HGA Scholarship is December 1st, 2024. You can find our how to apply or donate by clicking here.

Many HGA members have come out to volunteer their time with our nursery and we couldn’t be more grateful for their help. Want to volunteer with WNGC? Please email us for volunteer opportunities at [email protected]!

Pest Prevention Pro Tips

Pests are abundant in Hawai’i. From Giant African Snails to invasive fire ants, we sure do have some nuisances in our gardens. Here’s a few things you can do to keep your crops safe:

  1. Limit the number of places pests can live and hide. Remove unnecessary groundcover, cut back vegetation, and remove unnecessary items stored on the ground.

  2. Baits & barriers: Baits and barriers will help slow down pest populations on your property.

  3. Prune infested plant leaves and wash them down with insecticidal soap.

  4. Companion Plants: Some plants, such as citronella and cinnamon, naturally repel pests. Read this informative article for more information on companion plants!

  5. Planting to Support Beneficial Insects: Adding pollinator-friendly plants to your garden, like crown flower and milkweed, can help it thrive and support the beneficial insects on your property.

Wish Upon a Wedding

A newly engaged couple was dealt a devastating blow mid-wedding planning when the bride-to-be was diagnosed with cancer. All money and resources were re-allocated to hospital bills. Plans for a wedding seemed far-fetched… Until Wish Upon a Wedding stepped in.

The couple was specially chosen to be the recipient of complimentary wedding funds for their special day. We are honored to be a “Wish Granter” — to provide a full floral collection worth over $3,500.00 to this lovely couple who have been through so much.
