Lilikoi (Passion Fruit)
Passionfruit vines are vigorous growers, producing stunning flowers and an abundance of delicious fruit. The ‘Lilikoi,’ or Yellow Passionfruit, is the most common variety in Hawaii, known for its rich, acidic flavor, making it perfect for juices, jellies, and dessert toppings. The ‘Purple Passionfruit’ is sweeter and ideal for fresh eating; it thrives in partial shade and grows well in upslope conditions. The ‘Jamaican Passionfruit’ features a soft orange skin and offers a delightful sweetness. In contrast, the ‘Orange Passionfruit’ has a hard orange exterior and sweet juice. Lastly, the ‘Giant Granadilla,’ or Giant Passionfruit, prefers shady environments and produces large flowers and football-sized fruit, though it is less flavorful than its counterparts.
