How Do We Provide Sustainable Flower Services?
It is no secret that the wedding flower industry can be incredibly wasteful. While wedding flowers add beauty to your special day, things like pesticides, plastics, and international shipping take a toll on our planet and the environment. Whether you are simply looking to add a unique touch to your wedding, searching for budget-friendly flowers, or hoping to have a more eco-friendly, sustainable celebration, there are plenty of ways to accomplish all three and we are here to help!
We start by offering fresh, home-grown flower and foliage options, grown without the use of harmful chemicals or pesticides. Sourcing from our own three-acre property, including our 6,000 water-conserving aquaponic garden, is one way we help reduce our carbon footprint and provide affordable flowers for our customers. Flowers and foliage that we grow onsite include: anthuriums, areca palms, birds of paradise, bromeliads, croton, dracaena, ginger, heliconia, hydrangea, hibiscus, orchids, mini sunflower, monstera, ti leaf, zinnia, and more. We are blessed to be located in one of the most lush location on Oahu- Windward Oahu- and have lots of neighbor farmers that produce beautiful local blooms, year round. Being flexible with your flower selection is the best way that you can ensure beautiful, fresh, local, and sustainably produced flowers for your next special occasion.
Our "floral donation" program has been re-purposing event flowers, non-recyclable floral oasis, and plastic and glass vessels into bouquets and arrangements for terminally ill patients, through our partnership with Island's Hospice "Blossoms of Hope" project. When our couples choose to donate their flowers, they are also helping us provide value to other couples orders, as we often re-use plastic and glass vessels, wire, plastic cages, and other "wasteful" floral components. It takes a lot of natural resource to grow, ship, and create flowers- and the more use we can get out of each bloom- the better we can protect our environment and be responsible stewards of the land. Please consider donating all or part of your next big floral order to our donation program. Even if you did not purchase your event flowers from our business, you can ask your event planner to coordinate delivery or pick-up for your next event.
Working with perishable items, it is important to us to produce as little waste as possible. We make efforts to compost our green waste or feed it to our farm pet, Bacon the Juliana pig. Our neighbors chickens and ducks also appreciate a lot of the tasty flowers that don't make it to market!
We make every effort to propagate any plants or cuttings that are left over from our designs (or returned to us, but not in usable form). Our 6,000 gallon aquaponic garden makes it possible for us to propagate a good number of cuttings without the use of chemicals. Commonly propagated stems include: ti leaves, song of india, croton, hibiscus, golden el dorado, plumeria, hydrangea, gardenia, and podocarpus. Re-growing flowers and foliage for our couples from our bride's bridal bouquets give us great satisfaction and our couples love enjoying the re-generated plants from their special day, for years to come in their home or garden. Please let us know if you are interested in adding blooms, foliage, or succulents, to your special event flowers that can be cultivated and grown, long past your special celebration.
For a sustainable party favor, our florist offers a variety of seed packets, small succulents, and pre-packaged (approved for shipping) tropical plants, roots, and cuttings. These make wonderful, sustainable, favors for your next event. Your guests will love their new plants and think fondly of your special event, for many years to come. Choose from: anthuriums, plumeria cuttings, ti logs, ginger roots & plants, birds of paradise, hibiscus, and a variety of orchids. Contact us for special bulk pricing on gift plants for your next event.
While we agree that custom packaging and boxes are super cute and trendy, we opt for recycled and re-usable packaging for our arrangement. For our local deliveries, we use re-usable wooden boxes to transport your arrangements from our shop to your door. For larger orders and events, we choose recycled boxes, newspapers, and even packaging that our imported flowers arrive in. This helps us to reduce our waste and to pass along the savings to our valued customers, you!
If you have any new or used vases, vessels, baskets, pots or other flower or garden items, please consider donating to them recycling program. Items can be dropped off to our location, day and night, for your convenience! All donations are eligible to receive a $5.00 discount off flowers or plants in our garden and gift shop- just leave your name, contact number, and Email on your donation and we will send you out a personalized thank-you message along with the discount coupon.
Thank you for supporting our small, local, woman owned business. We appreciate your support as we strive for a more sustainable future for Hawaii and globally. MAHALO.
